I have several frequently used margin settings for Word documents - Windows 10 Word I have saved the most common one as the default.

However, I cannot find a way to add custom margin options - instead I have to set them for each document. Is there not a way to save several custom settings to choose from instead of the word preset options? Create a separate template for each set of margins you want to save, and base each new document on the template that has the desired margins.

Because margins are a property of a section, and an otherwise blank template usually has only one section, you can't save multiple margin settings in one template. To simplify choosing the correct template to create a new document, name the templates to identify their margin settings.

Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Attaching a template to an existing document won't change the margins. This is by design.

Instead, what you can do is create a new document based on your template and then bring in existing content via Insert Object Text from File. OK got it open the. You still don't appear to have got it. You don't open templates to use them, you create new documents from them. Hi Carol, What you need to do is create a new document based on the template, not attach it. Attaching a template gives you some resources from a template but does not give you that template's document structure.

It gets that from the creation template. If you double-click on one of your templates, you will have a new document with the margins that you set. Jay, Graham and I were trying to steer you to easy ways to create a new document based on your custom templates from within Word.

Hi Carol, Following up on the excellent advice from Jay I agree that custom templates are the best option or you. You could also use the classic File New dialog to use your template and even the built-in File New dialog.

File New Variations in the Versions of Word An alternative would be to create macros for your settings. That would still not put them in margin dialog, though. Carol, I suspect that you are one of those people who: Expect Word to act rationally, or at least like another word processing program. Expect words used describing features in Word to mean what they do in everyday usage. Unfortunately, you are likely to be disappointed if you hold either of these expectations. Note: If your document contains multiple sections, the new margin type will only be applied to the current section. To apply the new margin type to multiple sections, be sure to select each one. Make your new margin settings the default for your template. Each new document based on that template will automatically use the new margin settings.

Choose Margins after you select a new margin, and then choose Custom Margins. Change the margins for only a section of a document by selecting the text and entering the new margins in the Page Setup dialog box. In the Apply to box, click Selected text. Microsoft Word automatically inserts section breaks before and after the text with new margin settings. Most printers require a minimum width for margin settings.

If your settings are too narrow, Microsoft Word displays the message One or more margins are set outside the printable area of the page. Click Fix to automatically increase the margin width. If you ignore the message, Word will display another message asking whether you want to continue. Minimum margin settings for printing depend on your printer, printer driver, and paper size.

To learn about your minimum settings, check your printer manual. Use mirror margins to set up facing pages for double-sided documents, such as books or magazines. When you choose mirror margins, the margins of the left page are a mirror image of those on the right page.

The inside margins are the same width, and the outside margins are the same width. Note: To change margin widths, click Custom Margins at the bottom of the Margins gallery. Enter new values in the Inside and Outside boxes. A gutter margin adds extra space to the side margin, top margin, or inside margins of a document that you plan to bind to help ensure that text isn't obscured by binding.

In the Gutter position box, click Left or Top. Note: The Gutter position box is not available when you use the Mirror margins , 2 pages per sheet , or Book fold option.

And when I try to format the document so it was the same as before my computer operating system crashed, it will not allow the same amount of information on the page. I do get a message telling me that the formatting is outside of printing margins but I do not care.

I need all the information in those columns on one page, just like it used to be, instead of spilling over to the next page. I can have the top line be "0" but it was. And even when I do "0" for the top margin:. I've tried to expand the right margin as far as I can Can anyone help me? Something has changed from Office to the version This thread is locked. Any content of an adult theme or inappropriate to a community web site. Any image, link, or discussion of nudity. Any behavior that is insulting, rude, vulgar, desecrating, or showing disrespect. Thanks for the suggestion. I had not thought of that. But even when I set it to "0", the text is still running past the set margins.

Now at least it is where it should be. Even changing the right indent does not change the generated Table of Contents. That still goes way over the margins. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community.

These are the relevant settings I have in the document: All margins: 0. However, if I try to reset the margins through the pull down menuy to anything else OR keep the margins the same I get this error message: Settings you chose for the left and right margins, column spacing, or paragraph indents are too large for the page width in some sections. The page prints as it is shown on the screen. I have the same question Report abuse. Details required :. Cancel Submit.
